The chase prospects on May 30th were fairly slim, but one must always be mindful of High Plains Magic. Or, in this case, Raton Mesa Magic. Our four-vehicle chase caravan was in scenic-photography mode as we toured the high elevation and sparsely populated area from La Junta to Branson (and stopped again at Cedar Crest, CO—see May 17, 2007), and south from there into New Mexico. The elevation here is nearly 7000 feet, and a fairly healthy low-precipitation supercell formed just west of us during the late afternoon, near Capulin. The cell moved east and dissipated at sunset.
