On this Friday I met up with Brian and Nancy Morganti for a weekend to be filled with spectacular desert scenery and photography fun. We lunched in beautiful downtown Trona, California, and then made the short trip along the edge of Searles Dry Lake to the Trona Pinnacles. A large crew of folks was camped out by the pinnacles for a movie shoot or commercial or something. And, the sun was rather high in the sky, so the light was somewhat harsh and flat. We spent about an hour at there, and then headed north into the desolate Panamint Valley.
Weather in Panamint Valley was benign and pleasant, with some cirrus and cirrocumulus around for window dressing. The featured landmarks today were Telescope Peak and the Panamint Dunes. Telescope Peak dominates the Panamint Range and the eastern side of the valley, and the dunes are a curious patch on the slopes north of Panamint Valley’s northern playa. A side trip up a desert wash just west of Panamint Springs led us to Darwin Falls, and we photographed both the peak and the dunes again from Father Crowley Point at sunset. Lenticular clouds and the Zodiacal Light occupied our evening hours!
