Unfortunately, the last half of this tour was a little short on good storms.
On May 3rd, we viewed a dud cumulus field from a dam near Independence, KS.
On the 4th, we headed up into western Iowa with somewhat high expectations, and wound up with little. There was some junky, soft-topped convection in front of a cold front. The evening was highlighted by some cool wind and rain with occasional lightning crawlers at Jefferson, IA.
After a noon-time laundry stop in Carroll, IA, on the 5th, we headed west to Belleville, KS, on May 5th, a reposition day.
On May 6th, I was initially suckered southwest (from the Hoxie area) to a storm tower in the hot air of Pawnee County, KS. It fizzled, and we went back north to some much better organized cells near the KS/NE border north of Hoxie. We got stuck briefly on a muddy road near McCook as a warned cell loomed to the west—-but managed to push the van back out of trouble. A storm with large hail was nearby as we waited under a roof in Culbertson, but it wound up missing us. We followed the activity at night to our motel in Alma, NE.
Another down day on the 7th, and with the tour nearing its end we headed south towards our Dallas base. Along the way we visited Greensburg, KS, and the Twister Museum in Wakita, OK.
Apparently I failed to shoot any stills of the storms during this time frame!
