I suppose it’s time for an update from Plains Central. When we last left you, we were at the beginning of my first chase tour (Tour 2 for Tempest Tours), and we had seen the nice tornadic supercell in northern Kansas (see the April 29th post fot that). The next couple of days were active, and we were pulled east into the jungles and hills of IL, MO, and AR. There was a high risk day in AR on May 1, and we got on one of the many tornado-warned cells that did not tornado until dark. The rest of the tour was fairly uneventful, except for a fun chase in NW KS/SW/NE on May 6.
Tour 3 began yesterday, and we were on the raging beast of a supercell near Red Rock, OK. It was not interested in producing a tornado when it blew past us at 50 mph, though. We did see great structure and had inflow winds of 40 mph! See Brian Morganti’s pics at
Today we are headed for western OK. I started writing a detailed summary of our first tour a couple of days ago, and hope to finish that up soon.
Thanks for checking in—-all is well in Bill Reid land!
