We began this day in Burlington, and targeted the I-25 corridor from about Pueblo to Raton. Moisture appeared better near the Raton Mesa, but flow was better near I-70. We were not pressed for time, so we spent some time exploring an old school house in Arlington, CO, on Route 96. After lunch at a cafe in Sugar City, I directed the group into Walsenburg, and then west and northwest into the Wet Valley via Route 69. There were some indications that a decent storm was possible in this high-elevation area, but the subsequent convection here fell into the “very junky, high-based virga bomb” category. To add insult to lousy chase decision-making, a robust cumulonimbus exploded down south near Raton; and, well to the north, another one went up northwest of Colorado Springs, culminating in a decent supercell west of Limon at dusk. Shucks. We stopped east of Westcliffe to poke around an old cabin or two prior to finding our motel in Colorado Springs.
