June 9, 2010 Scottsbluff cumulonimbus

June 9, 2010 By Bill Leave a Comment

We scooted north on I-25 from Colorado Springs to target something on or around the Cheyenne Ridge.  Lunch was in Fort Collins, and, to my dismay, that “something” commenced halfway through my tacos.  A decent cell pulled us east along I-80 to Sidney, NE.  It was very strong briefly, and then struggled.  I elected to mosey south to Brush, CO, as the Palmer Divide and northeast CO looked to have better prospects later in the afternoon.  But, that area remained hopelessly capped.  We semi-salvaged the day near Scottsbluff at dusk when we came up behind a strong updraft.  It seemed that upper-level support was somewhat ill-timed on this day for a decent long-lived supercell…and moisture was not impressive at all east of 385.  Our tour group wound up in Kimball for the night.
