This page is dedicated solely to the annular eclipse on May 20, 2012, in West Texas. A storm chase earlier on this date terminated in a fortuitous locale —- just a county or two away from prime sunset/moonset eclipse viewing!
After our little supercell/hailer fizzled well SSE of Guthrie, we stopped for a pit stop in Aspermont. From there, I had Chris and Bob take us west on U.S. 380 in order to find a suitable spot to watch the eclipse at sunset — which was only an hour or so away. I knew that the farther west we went the better. It would have been ideal to get up on the Caprock towards the Post, TX, area, but that was a tad too far away for us. It looked like the Jayton area would have to do. I wanted to be set up at least 20 minutes or so before sunset, and not frantically searching for a good high spot in these somewhat hilly wastelands as sunset neared.
So, we found a decent spot along U.S. 380 a mile or so east of Jayton. Bob loaned me his gigantic 400 mm lens and I stuck it onto the Canon 5D, and plopped that onto the tripod and started to shoot!
