January 13, 2013 continued cold spell update

January 13, 2013 By Bill Leave a Comment

Sunday, January 13th, is the 4th day of “cold” winter temperatures here in Southern California.  A cold front swept through early on Thursday, the 10th, with mostly clear skies and cold northerly flow aloft on the 11th, 12th and 13th.  North to northwest surface gradients weakened considerably on the 12th and early on the 13th, and morning winds were light region-wide.  This helped to give most UN-wind-protected valley stations (in our area of interest —- the Conejo and San Fernando valleys) their coolest morning yet.  Even the coldest wind-protected frost pockets and canyon areas were a little colder on minimums compared to the previous two mornings.

The air at mid-levels continued quite cold on the 13th, with about -10 to -12C at 700mb.  Mid-afternoon temperatures in the mid-50s on the 12th fell rapidly around sunset, thanks to the clear skies, very light winds, and relatively dry air.  The low-level air wasn’t bone dry, as dew points were in the high teens to around 20F.  Nevertheless this was dry enough to allow the rapid decrease in temperature during the evening.  At the Westlake Village station EW0033, about a half mile west of the lake near Triunfo and Westlake Blvd., the temperature was 51F at 3 p.m., 44F at 5 p.m., 34F at 7 p.m., and already 29F at 9 p.m.!  Yikes!

Clear and calm continued, and it was 26F at midnight and 1 a.m.  However, an area of mid-level clouds associated with a small upper-level circulation moved overhead from the north during the next couple of hours.  The clouds caused a little warming at the surface, and the temperature at WLV/EW0033 drifted up to 28F at 3 a.m.  The disturbance and the clouds quickly moved away to the south, and clear skies allowed cooling to commence again.  At 4 a.m. it was 26F, it was 25F at 5, 23F at 6 and 22F at 7:15 a.m. PST.  The upper-level system didn’t appear to have much if any affect on the low-level wind field.

The 22F minimum at WLV/EW0033 is the coldest there so far this winter.  The temperature was 28F or colder for about 10 and one-half hours, from 10 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.!  I suspect that the tender vegetation and sensitive plants had a rough go of it Sunday morning.  The other cold valley and canyon-bottom stations in the area had similar minimums.  My place in WLV, a mile north of EW0033 (a half mile north of the Ventura Freeway near Westlake Blvd.) dropped to 24F, and my minimum thermometer in a nearby undeveloped frost pocket showed 21F.  I drove the 8 miles to my thermometer at the Calabasas frost pocket, near the City Hall at Mureau and Las Virgenes, and it showed a low of 20F.  (This was the low for the two previous mornings, but the 20F very likely occurred on the 13th.)  Malibu Canyon, Lobo Canyon, and Topanga had minimums of 21F to 22F.

San Fernando Valley minimums were near to a little below freezing, and the foothill slopes and well-exposed locations around the valley dropped only into the mid to upper 30s.  The coldest I could find was 27F in Woodland Hills and Winnetka.  The coldest station in the Santa Clarita Valley was a WU (Weather Underground) station in Newhall, just north of Newhall Pass.   It had 20F.  Antelope Valley minimums were generally from 10F to 20F, though Lancaster/Fox Field had 9F and a private station (Lancaster/WW6RY) a few miles northwest of there was 3F.

At mountain stations, coldest were Chuchupate, near Frazier Park, at -3F, Big Bear City AP at -4F and -8F at Baldwin Lake.

As far as the San Fernando Valley and Conejo Valley and vicinity are concerned, the current cold spell does not quite match the cold episode of January 14, 2007.  On this date a somewhat “perfect storm” of ingredients resulted in one very cold night.  When this current cold spell is finished, I’ll compare the coldest readings with those from January 14, 2007 and other cold weather “outbreaks”.
