This is the fourth daily installment for our current mid-winter cold spell. I get a little long-winded in the comparisons and explanations, but somebody’s got to say it. This is for posterity. Loads of tables and NWS statements are towards the bottom.
Today the surface flow over Los Angeles and Ventura counties turned more north to northeasterly, as opposed to the northwesterly flow for January 11, 12 and 13th. Surface high pressure built strongly into NV and UT on the morning of the 14th, and sea-level pressures were from 1037 to 1040 mb from Winnemucca to Cedar City by the evening hours on the 14th. At the same time, a 1030 mb isobar ran from about Lancaster to Las Vegas, and readings near 1026 mb were common in the San Fernando Valley and the Los Angeles coastal areas.
North to northeast Santa Ana winds increased overnight as offshore gradients (from the Mojave Desert to the coast) increased, and upper-level support and cold-air advection perked up, too. Wind-exposed hilltops and foothill communities around the San Fernando Valley experienced winds all night long, with speeds of about 15 to 30 mph common. Most of the San Fernando Valley floor was breezy all night, too: hourly wind obs at Van Nuys AP were north at 13 to 17 mph for the most part, and Chatsworth and Northridge were much the same. With the wind and the mixing, low-level radiation inversions were unable to form, and overnight temperatures stayed up and were warmer than the previous night. Overnight minimums were mostly in the mid-upper 30s on the floor of the San Fernando Valley, some five to ten degrees warmer than the previous (calm) morning.
Somewhat more interesting were the minimums at the wind-exposed hilltops around the valley. These were DOWN a full 2 to 5 degrees compared to the morning of the 13th. Cold air was advecting into the region from the north and northeast. Wind gusts included NE 58 mph at Malibu/DW5145, a hilltop station at 1715 feet north of Leo Carrillo Beach. This was around sunrise, with a temperature of 35F —- brrr! Another higher station in the Santa Monica Mountains, Malibu/DW2363, gusted to 42 mph from the east around sunrise with a temperature of 29F. Elevation here is 2450 feet. Porter Ranch/DW4339 (elev. 1634 feet) was gusting to 28 mph at sunrise on the 14th, with a temperature of 32F. Strongest gust was NNE 40 mph around 2 p.m., with a temperature of 45F, the max temp for the day. At Van Nuys AP at 7 a.m., it was a chilly 36F with a north wind at 22 mph, gusting to 30 mph.
Compared to the previous day, the temperature at 700mb over the region was up a few degrees (to about -5C), according to the soundings at Vandenberg and Miramar. Why was it getting colder at low levels if it was getting warmer around 10,000 feet altitude? The large surface high that was/is building over the Great Basin is associated with cold air at low levels. As this feature increased and moved closer to Southern California, its influence was felt all the way to the coast. It shoved cold air from the Mojave Desert through Newhall and Cajon and Banning passes into coastal and valley sections. On the previous three days, low-level air through the region was moderated some as it had been over the relatively cool to mild Pacific Ocean. On the 14th, with the flow out of the north and northeast, air that had been chilled for several days in the basins of the Mojave Desert and the Great Basin spilled into the San Fernando and Conejo valleys. Stations which bore the brunt of the north winds found it very difficult to warm up on the 14th despite bright sunshine all day, except for the occasional cirrus cloud. Van Nuys AP had a max temp of only 52F, and it was a degree cooler at Northridge and Chatsworth. Burbank AP is conveniently sheltered from Santa Ana winds in many instances, and on the 14th the north wind was weak midday and conditions were more tolerable, with a high of 56F. Other chilly max temps in the bright sunshine included 35F on Oat Mountain, 50F near the town of Topanga, and only 47 to 49F in the hills north of Agoura and Westlake Village.
It is fairly rare, on the floor of the San Fernando Valley at 800 feet above sea level, to have temperatures in the 30s with an active north wind blowing. Conditions as cold as at Van Nuys AP at sunrise on the 14th, with a temperature of 36F and a sustained wind at 22 mph, might be expected on only a few days every ten years or so. The coldest north winds (i.e., the coldest active Santa Ana condition) in the previous 50 years or so have been with temperatures in the low to mid 30s in the San Fernando Valley. On February 6 and 7, 1989, very dry north winds blew and the high temps were 45 and 48 on these two days at my western Woodland Hills weather station. There was plenty of sunshine on these days, too! On the morning of the 6th, the minimum was 33F, and the wind was gusting to 30 mph. Early on the 8th, a weather system moved in from the west and precipitated into the dry and cold low-level air. An inch or two of snow was the result in Woodland Hills! The other true Arctic air intrusion into the San Fernando Valley that I have documented firsthand was December 21 to 23, 1990. An Arctic front swept through around the 21st, and at 7 p.m. on the 21st, Van Nuys AP reported 33F with a north wind at 18 knots gusting to 30 knots! The minimum at my station in Woodland Hills was 22F on the 22nd as the wind died. But, at Chatsworth and Van Nuys and many other areas of the San Fernando Valley, the frigid north wind continued all night long. The temperature dropped to 30F while the wind blew. That is about as cold as it has been in the valley during a Santa Ana/offshore wind event in the previous 50 years or so. The current event is about 5 to 6 degrees warmer than this December 1990 event. The Arctic/offshore flow/snow event in early January 1949 was likely colder than the December 1990 event.
Okay, back to the current weather…
Minimums this morning in the Conejo Valley were quite a bit warmer than the previous very cold morning, because of the sporadic winds. With gusts of 30 to 50 mph in the nearby hilltops, it was difficult to impossible to maintain a low-level radiation inversion in even the best wind-protected low spots. Still, a handful of stations managed to get down into the upper 20s. At WLV/EW0033, it was calm into the evening hours of the 13th, and the temperature plummeted to 31F as early as 9 p.m. A light breeze stalled the temperature descent, and it remained around 32F to midnight. Moderate winds then mixed down to replace the cold air at low levels, and the temperature was up to 39F by 2 a.m. But, calm conditions returned and it chilled quickly again at WLV/EW0033, dropping to 26F at 4:43 a.m. With a dew point of 10F, it may well have dropped close to 20F by sunrise, but the wind kicked up a little once more, and the temperature was in the low 30s from 5 a.m. to sunrise around 7:15 a.m.
Malibu Canyon is more exposed to north winds than Westlake Village. Like station WLV/EW0033, its temperature fell quickly on the evening of the 13th, and it was 30F at 11 p.m. The north wind started, and it was 39F at 2 a.m. Unlike WLV/EW0033, Malibu Canyon did not get another calm stretch before sunrise, and temperature remained in the upper 30s. Most of the stations in the Conejo Valley area had much warmer minimums on the 14th compared to the 13th, because of the wind. Again, the exception was the well-exposed elevated stations, which were a little cooler due to the colder air coming in from the Mojave Desert.
I am impressed by the cold sounding out of Las Vegas at 00Z Jan 15 (late afternoon on the 14th, pasted below). Las Vegas AP had a max temp of only 38F on both the 13th and 14th, despite plenty of sunshine and mixing from the surface to 8000 feet. North winds brought plenty of cold air from the snow-covered basins of central and northern NV into the Vegas valley. The sounding shows a nice dry adiabatic lapse rate from the surface to about 770 mb (around 8000′, where the temperature was about -13C/9F). This frigid airmass allowed a max of only 38F at Las Vegas and 53F below sea level at Furnace Creek in Death Valley. North winds ruled the sounding from the surface all the way up. Dew points were well below 0F at low levels!
Also of interest is the forecast discussion from Elko, NV, on Monday afternoon (January 14):
TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY...NO CHANGES IN SENSIBLE WEATHER EXPECTED. HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS IN AGGRESSIVELY ALOFT WITH STRONG HEIGHT RISES AND WARMING IN THE MID/UPPER LEVELS. THIS WILL HELP MOUNTAIN TEMPERATURES MODERATE...BUT DO LITTLE TO WARM UP THE VALLEYS. MODEL SOUNDINGS INDICATE INTENSE INVERSIONS TO PERSIST THROUGH THURSDAY...STRENGTHENED BY SNOWPACK ON THE GROUND AND WARMING ALOFT. STRONG HIGH PRESSURE SURFACE AND ALOFT WILL ENSURE SKIES REMAIN CLEAR OR MOSTLY CLEAR...VERY FEW CLOUDS EXPECTED. THAT SAID...CAN NOT RULE OUT PATCHY FREEZING FOG EACH MORNING AND HAZE/POLLUTION SHOULD GRADUALLY INCREASE WITH TIME UNDER SOME OF THE MORE POPULATED VALLEY INVERSIONS. REGARDING TEMPERATURES MODEL GUIDANCE IS ONCE AGAIN USELESS AND IGNORED ALL OF IT. BASICALLY USED PERSISTENCE AND PREVIOUS RTP OBSERVATIONS AS A GUIDE AND EXTENDED THROUGH TIME. STRUGGLING INTO THE LOWER TEENS IN THE AFTERNOON...FALLING WELL BELOW ZERO AT NIGHT. OF NOTE...18Z NAM PLACES AN IMPRESSIVE 1050 MB SURFACE HIGH FROM NEAR WINNEMUCCA TO NEAR ELKO NEAR SUNRISE/7 AM WEDNESDAY. GIVEN THIS PURPOSELY NUDGED LOW TEMPERATURES DOWN SEVERAL MORE DEGREES. MORNING LOWS OF -20 OR COLDER WILL BE COMMON WEDNESDAY MORNING WITH RECORD/NEAR RECORD COLD EXPECTED. PETS/LIVESTOCK...PIPES...AND AUTOMOBILES WILL CONTINUE TO BE ADVERSELY AFFECTED. HOW MANY DAYS LEFT UNTIL SPRING STARTS?
When this cold spell began I mentioned that I did not think that it measured up to a true “Arctic” event for Southern California, at least at low levels, where it counts the most. Three or four days later, the low levels are indeed becoming more and more Arctic-like. I am still not quite ready to call this an Arctic-like event for Southern California, but it is close, especially since dew points have plunged and low-level air is spilling in from the north and has not been moderated by the ocean.
The dry air and slight cooling at low levels helped to give some wind-protected areas their lowest minimums of the event. Los Angeles’ official station at USC (KCQT) dropped to 34F on Monday morning. This was the coldest temperature here since December 23, 1990, when it was 28F.
Other impressive minimums on January 14th:
-8F at Bladwin Lake, near Big Bear Lake
-4F at Big Bear City AP
19F at Amboy
22F at Temecula
-27F at Bodie, CA
-19F at Boca Resrvoir, CA
9F at Edwards and Bishop
and -11F at Bridgeport’ s Airport (Bryant Field). It was -29F here on the previous morning.
