July 13, 2013 Chase Update

Chase season is over, and, golly, I have not been doing a good job at keeping my web site updated.  I only have several hours of video and thousands and thousands of images to weed through and dozens of chase accounts to write and post on the Bruiser.  That isn’t really my idea of fun, but it has to be done!

Let’s get the process started by doing a quick and dirty list here of my entire chase season as the Tempest Tours tour director:

Tour 1/DFW

4/20  no storms, end Shamrock, TX

4/21  no storms, virga bombs W KS, end Jetmore, KS

4/22  supercell and hailstorm near Alva, OK and Carmen, OK supercell, end Perry, OK

4/23 down day, cold N winds, end El Reno, OK

4/24 no storms, sight-seeing along I-40 to McLean, TX, end McLean

4/25 down day, end Perry, OK

4/26  splendidly sculpted supercell Elk City to Cordell, OK; end Vernon, TX

4/27  couple of supercells south of Rocksprings, TX; end Rocksprings, TX

4/28  visit to Sonora Caverns, high-based storms west of Sanderson, TX, brief severe cell se of Sanderson;  end Sanderson, TX

4/29 strong cells near Junction and Fredericksburg, TX; intense colors with storm at sunset; end Stonewall, TX

4/30  back to DFW, and then to OKC

 

Tour 2

5/01  high-based storms along front near Seymour and Albany, TX; severe downburst at Albany and continuous lightning in-cloud behind updraft at dusk; end Breckenridge, TX

5/02  cold N winds, down time, end Terlingua, TX

5/03  scenic Big Bend National Park, end Terlingua

5/04 scenic Big Bend NP, end Terlingua

5/05 continued down time, MacDonald Observatory, Fort Davis, Kent, TX ghost town; end Van Horn

5/06 dusty supercell Portales, NM, to Morton, TX; end Plainview, TX

5/07  supercell Dighton to Ness City, KS; end Dodge City, KS

5/08  LP supercell near Sitka/Protection, KS; evening lightning near Alva, OK; end Clinton, OK

5/09  supercells moving southeast near Santa Anna, Mason, and Fredericksburg, TX; end Fredericksburg, TX

5/10  dying supercell near El Indio, TX; big hailer/wind and dust bomb thru Pearsall, TX; end San Antonio, TX

5/11  back to OKC

5/12 in OKC, prepare for next tour

 

Tour 3

5/13  position day to Childress, TX

5/14  marginally severe cells Rankin/Big Lake, TX; end Abilene, TX

5/15  brief supercell near Anson, TX; tornado and supercell at Millsap, TX; near Mineral Wells; end Cresson, TX

5/16 long reposition drive to Goodland, KS, with dying cell eastern Baca County, CO

5/17  north to junky cells near Merriman, NE; fantastic sunset and lightning with supercells near Bingham, NE; end Ogallala, NE

5/18  bust Greensburg, KS, area, end Wichita, KS

5/19  Viola, KS tornado; linear junky stuff Blackwell OK to Independence, KS; end Independence, KS

5/20  supercells Chickasha, OK, to Saint Jo, TX (day of Moore, OK, tornado); end Wichita Falls, TX

5/21  undercut, midday, linear mess Breckenridge to DFW and early end to chase in Dallas; end Wichita Falls, TX

5/22  down day, reposition to Plainview, TX, via Turkey

5/23  high-based dusty supercell with early landspouts near Floydada, TX; north to junky cells near AMA; end Shamrock

5/24  back to OKC

 

Tour 4

5/25  long drive OKC to Hazard, NE; weak-ish left-moving supercells around sunset; end Grand Island, NE

5/26  pretty LP supercell w/great structure Ansley/Arcadia NE; end Cozad, NE

5/27  HP beast Smith Center, KS; rain-wrapped tornado Esbon, KS; end Salina, KS

5/28  pretty supercell Haxtum to Julesburg, CO; end Ogallala, NE

5/29  numerous cells,/early junky stuff in sw NE; t-warned cell near Cotesfield, NE; end Hastings, NE

5/30  long drive to Rubottom, OK; big HP supercell and small dying LP along Red River; end Ardmore, OK

5/31  El Reno tornado; end Lawton, OK

6/01 back to OKC (via DFW), El Reno tornado damage survey

6/02 drive to DEN for week of rest

 

Tour 6

6/09  clear skies, visited WY/CO/NE triple point, and Milky Way/Northern Lights observation north of Scottsbluff late evening;  end BFF

6/10  Devils Tower, dying junk south of Gillette, WY, late evening t-storms; end Belle Fourche, SD

6/11  supercell west of Alliance, NE; end Chadron, NE

6/12  supercells near Gillette and Buffalo, WY; end Sheridan, WY

6/13  early Sheridan to Biddle, MT, supercell; high-based cell later south of Gillette, WY; end Hot Springs, SD

6/14  near sunset weak storms around Kimball, NE; end Kimball

6/15  back to DEN via Greeley

 

Tour 7

6/16  se-moving supercells in the vicinity of Arthur, NE;  end Chadron, NE

6/17  reposition to northern MT; end Chinook, MT

6/18  Hilda, AB supercell, Medicine Hat, AB sunset/lightning; end Medicine Hat, AB

6/19  Elkwater, AB, supercell and brief tornado;  end Swift Current, AB

6/20  reposition via Glasgow and Baker, MT, to Bowman, ND

6/21  severe storms Jay Em and Lingle and Torrington, WY;  end Torrington, WY

6/22  brief tornado near Wheatland, WY; Dix, NE tornado; end Greeley, CO

6/23  back to DEN

 

Tour 9

6/24  weak cells Phillipsburg KS to Oxford, NE, cap bust; LL jet elevated convection late, west of St Paul; end St. Paul

6/25  western Iowa bust, winding up near DSM; end Indianola, IA

6/26  Madison County, IA covered bridges; junky tall storms near Grinnell, IA, dying mid-afternoon; end Red Oak, IA

6/27  shelf cloud near Beatrice, NE; supercell near Diller, NE; supercell W of Beverly, KS, mov SE and becoming big dusty outflow machine; pretty sunset at Hutchinson, KS; end Hutch

6/28  hi-based supercell Vona, CO, moving south; Kiowa sunset and lightning; end Castle Rock

6/29  Haswell, CO supercell and pretty sunset; end La Junta

6/30  stop at Model, CO; supercells near Capulin and Yates, NM; flooding south of Abbott; end Walsenburg, CO

7/01  back to DEN
