After our productive evening shooting lightning near Deming, NM, our tour group moseyed southwestward from Deming midday on the 5th. Crisp updrafts developed over the Chiricahua Mountains in extreme southeastern AZ, and we set up on the east side of the activity near the AZ/NM border, southwest of Rodeo, NM. One or two cells over the mountains to our west strengthened considerably, and one, closer to Douglas, appeared to be supercellular briefly. The storms diminished around sunset and left us without any lightning photography opportunities during the evening. We found rooms in Douglas, just a few blocks from a foreign country called “Mexico”.
