A lunar eclipse was to occur late on the night of April 14th and into the first hour or two of April 15th. Southern California was a good spot to view the event, as the moon would be high in the sky to the south and skies would be mostly clear. Some pesky thin cirrus clouds were moving through during the eclipse, but they added a little intrigue photographically. As midnight neared, I dragged my cameras and tripods to the back patio and to the courtyard behind my condo. It’s nice when one does not have to drive all day to get some cool images!
Mars was above and to the right of the moon as the Earth’s shadow moved across the moon. The bright, blue star Spica, in Virgo, was not too far to the right of the moon. I took plenty of images with both the 70-200mm and the 21 mm, and tried to work in the trees on the wide-angle shots. The cirrus clouds also allowed some interesting textures and effects.
