An April drive into Death Valley is never a bad idea — even better after Easter when nobody is around. The first two pics below are at the ghost town of Silver Lake, north of Baker by about 7 miles. There was an airport and weather station here during the 1940s. The next two images are at “Baker 9NNW,” a couple of miles farther north, where a weather station existed during much of the 1950s and 1960s.
Yes, I get my kicks by visiting places where old weather stations used to be.
Below are shots of the Amargosa River, where it crosses Highway 127 (about 40 miles north of Baker). The Amargosa River is typically dry, or below ground. It turns west and then north into Death Valley from here.
