SPC had a slight risk today in West Texas, from about Lubbock to Iraan, but I preferred the prospects up on the High Plains around extreme southeastern Colorado (where SPC painted a “marginal” risk). Maybe part of my “go north” thinking was based largely on knowing that we had to be up in the Nebraska Panhandle on the following day. We got out of Lubbock, enjoyed a Chinese food meal in Dumas, and continued into Baca County, CO. A high-based cell developed right on cue, but it wasn’t really well-organized. Moisture and instability were problematic, as were high clouds which limited insolation.
This activity sputtered as it dragged us a little north and east. A new updraft was spotted to our east, near the KS/CO border. This one showed some promise, so we scooted east to Syracuse and then south a few miles to get just east of the updraft. We wound up with a nice LP supercell for an hour or so, which gradually weakened as it drifted northeast towards Syracuse. We were left standing around Syracuse with nothing to chase, so we headed to Burlington, CO, for the night.
