We bagan this chase day in Lemmon, SD, following the fantastic aurora display the previous evening. SPC showed a slight risk on the High Plains from Limon to Broadus, but I thought that the setup just to our west, in extreme southwestern ND, was just as promising. We had plenty of time to kill midday, so the group stopped in Haynes, ND, and explored an abandoned school. After lunch in Hettinger, we checked out some of the goofy displays along the Enchanted Highway near Regent. A strong updraft to our west ended our fun with the local distractions. We watched a mediocre supercell near New England for a while. This storm had an RFD cut and hail shafts, but was not warned. Later, another semi-nasty cell dragged us from south of New England towards Hettinger. We made some smores as the storm approached. Overall, the storms this day were a notch or two short of impressive.
Prospects for the next day looked pretty good in Iowa, so we made our way to Mobridge for the night.
