It was time for a desert photography trip, and I just happened to have a few days off to do whatever I wanted to do! My friend Marcia and I made our way up CA 14 and U.S. 395 to the southern Owens Valley, and we were in the Alabama Hills behind Lone Pine in time for some sunset shots. The cirrus behind the Sierra had some nice color for a few fleeting minutes!
After there nice light of dusk dissipated, we continued up Whitney Portal Road to about the 7500-foot level, where some snow covered the road. We stopped up there to admire the dark night sky and the Milky Way, though there were some pesky high clouds around. Long exposures with high ISO settings resulted in the shots below, looking towards the west, towards the southern Sierra crest.
