SPC Day One 20Z

SPC storm reports

This was another chase day with relatively dim hopes.  SPC had a slight risk along a cold front up in the Central Plains.  Much of the Southern Plains’ lower atmosphere had been overturned by morning convection, so severe prospects during the afternoon and evening were along and south of an outflow boundary that was approaching Mexico.  Yuck.  There was enough instability and shear to require an upgrade to slight risk in southwest TX on the SPC 20Z outlook.  That is where we were headed — to the ends of the earth south of I-10, south of Sanderson.  From Marathon we continued south to some strong storms near the river and the Big Bend mountains.  This activity was undercut and ugly when we got close.  Some good air was still around to our northwest, so we headed back up to Marathon.  We stopped just short of the town to watch a rain blob descend from a strong storm, and later were in a pretty good spot east of Alpine to watch an electric storm with some structure as it moved along to our north.  Pretty good, that is, if you enjoy utility wire photography.
