From the top of San Nicolas Island (elevation about 900 feet) one is positioned nicely for very pretty sunsets. On this date I biked up the hill from Nicktown for sunset, with a goal of photographing a green flash. This “flash” sometimes occurs when the last light from the limb of the sun is disappearing behind the horizon. A temperature inversion generally is necessary for this effect of refraction to occur. The term “flash” is not the best —- it is more like a subtle and soft green blip, and rather tiny at that. At least that has been my experience with these!
My 70-200mm zoom lens was cranked all of the way to 200mm for these. A 400mm or 800mm lens is better suited for photographing the green flash, but no one has given me one of those yet. Some serious image cropping was employed here to allow better looks!
This final image is a smoky sunrise shot, from December 5.
