On January 13, I took a short bike ride from Nicktown to the east — to a flat area which used to be landfill, apparently. On the south side is the side canyon which feeds into Nick Crilley Canyon (first image below), on the east side is Nick Crilley Canyon (images 4 to 7 below), and on the north side, towards the ocean, is a slope which includes some large plastic tubes to reduce erosion. You don’t want that nasty landfill stuff surging towards the coastline in a bad storm, right?!
A day later I was back down along the north coast dirt road, with a stop in Spire Gulch (below):
And, from there, my intention was to hike back up into Nick Crilley Canyon. But, I didn’t go quite far enough west from Spire Gulch. I wound up in the relatively major canyon east of Nick Crilley Canyon. We will call this one “Blockade Canyon” because I was not able to get very far. The narrows came up to a spot that was blocked by boulders, and I was not interested in scaling these. A recent storm had left some pools and very mushy soils in the lowest portions of Blockade Canyon. This canyon was quite spectacular!
