It was a beautiful Friday for a hike on the island, so I biked on down to the north coast (dirt) highway, parked my bike along the road, and headed on into Nick Crilley Canyon. This is likely the largest and deepest canyon on the northern coast/side of San Nicolas Island. The upper portion of the canyon extends southward to between Nicktown and the airfield. And, the canyon was named by me for my nephew. Isn’t that sweet?!
Rainfall has been rare on the island since last winter. A storm in January dropped a half inch or so and caused some streamflow in the canyon. Some mushy spots, cracked earth, and green grass were along canyon bottom, but there was no running water or stream. A small pool or two had water. These images were with the 15mm wide-angle lens.
After this jaunt, I biked west just a little (a half mile?) and stopped to check out some badlands-like formations on the south side of the road. What should we call this area?
