December 19, 2018 Distant Meteor From San Nicolas Island

December 19, 2018 By William Reid Leave a Comment

I set up for another try at the Vandenberg rocket launch from San Nicolas Island, and witnessed a very bright meteor instead!  The launch was scrubbed at about the time the meteor occurred.  My camera was on the tripod and pointed to the WNW, and I did not hit the shutter release for the 5-second exposure until about the time the meteor was flaring out.  The meteor descended, low in the sky, towards the bottom of the frame.  The lens was a wide-angle 21mm, so the meteor is not particularly impressive.  The vapor trail persisted for at least ten minutes!  The image above is heavily cropped, the one below on the left is lightly cropped.
