The upper-level pattern continued to be unfavorable over the Plains, but as usually is the case in June, there was enough instability and moisture for a chance of thunderstorms. The better areas for strong-to-severe were centered near Hobbs, NM, and Minneapolis, MN. The tornado risk was very low everywhere, so it wasn’t worth a day-long drive from northwest Kansas just to get into somewhat better areas. We motored up to the Nebraska Sandhills and watched some unimpressive stuff near Mullen.
Slightly better prospects beckoned to the north, and we observed some high-based junk west of Mission, SD. The light at sunset was great, but the lightning frequency was not.
