We headed north into the Nebraska Sandhills from Kansas for this day’s chase. It looked like a tornado might be possible, given mid-60 dew points up around Valentine. We were at Merriman when a storm quickly went up to our west, at Gordon. It sported a great spaceship updraft base upon approach, with a little wall cloud, too. But, a bunch of new storms were developing some 50 miles to its ESE, and this new stuff was intercepting the moisture. Goodbye, Gordon storm.
We needed to get south or southeast of this new stuff, which was between Merriman and Hyannis. As we went south of Merriman, an interesting storm was just ahead. Its core was right over the road, and the hail got too large and we had to turn around. At least we were able to watch the wicked base of a slow-moving left-split just to the east. After three attempts and maybe 45 minutes later, we were finally able to get south. By now the storms were rather junky, and there was little left to target. We headed to a hilltop north of Lake Big Mac to hope for some lightning, but there was little.
