It was a lucky break to have a shift at LAX on this day! A big fire was in progress in the San Gabriel Mountains (the Bobcat Fire). The visibility was pretty good for a mid-September day, so the smoke plume was visible more than 45 miles away. There was a big flare-up and a surge in the plume around 4 p.m., and a little later some nice lenticular clouds developed above the plume. Not bad for a day at the office!
