May 4 to May 7, 2021 Rather Slow Chase Period

May 7, 2021 By William Reid Leave a Comment

Plains states chasers suffered through a very slow period from the 4th to the 7th of May.  Upper flow wasn’t too bad, but low-level moisture was poor.  Nevertheless, there were a couple of opportunities for storm observing.  We just had to keep in mind that severe weather was very unlikely.  Here are the particulars as to our whereabouts with T2:

May 4/Begin Ardmore, OK/End Kiowa, KS/289 miles

May 5/Begin Kiowa, KS/lunch Hardesty House in Ashland, KS/End Woodward, OK/332 miles

May 6/Begin Woodward/End Dodge City/138 miles

May 7/Begin Dodge City/End Woodward/376 miles

The images below are from May 4.  The first six are from Kiowa, Kansas, and the others were in the vicinity of Wakita, OK.  Yes, we visited the Twister Museum in Wakita.

May 5 pics are below, beginning with Jacob’s Well.  We observed high-based and outflow-ish convection from about Montezuma, KS, to Buffalo, OK.  Some might characterize this chase as approaching the “not entirely uninteresting” category.

And, the long-awaited group photos:

Below are images for May 6, when we visited Clark Lake State Park in southwestern Kansas.

We had a slight risk of severe weather in the OK PH on May 7!  Some iridescent cirrus clouds made an appearance midday near Elkhart, and later we had more high-based, junky, windy and dusty stuff from about Boise City to Hooker to Fort Supply.

Hey, you made it all of the way to the end, and you are rewarded with large versions of three Tour 2 group photos, courtesy of Chris and his drone.
