Start for tour group: OKC End: Dodge City
My drive to the Plains for chase season 2022 began on April 20. I made it to Gallup, NM, for the night, and made it to Woodward, OK, by late afternoon on April 21 for a storm chase. Bob Conzemius and the Tempest Tours/Tour 1 group were stationed in Woodward, at the south end of SPC’s 5 percent tornado risk.
It was nice that the cap was strong and held convection in check until my arrival. But, the strong cap was a bit reluctant to permit really robust updrafts until about sunset. We scooted north of Woodward and into Kansas a little to watch a tower or two strengthen.
We were lured farther north towards Kinsley, Kansas, as an organized cell looked like it might be a tornado candidate in our new tornado watch.
But, it was Sputtersville for both this storm and the tornado watch as a whole. Fortunately, we found a pretty storm at sunset southwest of Kinsley.
