The last few days of Tour 1 were slow, and we spent a couple of days poking around the Rio Grande (April 25 and 26). We managed to find a nice supercell at dusk near Amarillo on the 27th (this post), and we busted in the northeast Texas Panhandle on the 28th. Here are the particulars for these four days:
April 25/start Fort Stockton, lunch The Water Stop in Marfa, end Presidio (234 miles)
April 26/start Presidio, lunch Chili Pepper Cafe in Terlingua, end Brownfield (413 miles)
April 27/start Brownfield, TX, lunch The Grainery in Littlefield, end Amarillo (400 miles)
April 28/start Amarillo, lunch The Big Texan, end Kiowa, KS (325 miles)
Images below from the 26th, along the Rio Grande, southeast of Presidio.
On April 27th, storms were expected to develop in northeastern New Mexico during the afternoon, with a chance of them becoming severe as they moved into the Panhandles near and after sunset. We found a junky high-based storm north of Logan, New Mexico, and then a better one coming at us from the west.
This one near Tucumcari had a great look on radar, but again was very high-based.
This cell dragged us into the western Texas Panhandle, where we had a view of much improved low-level structure near sunset to the north of I-40. Somewhere between Vega and Bushland we stopped to shoot the storm and its lightning, to the NNE and NE.
Tour One folks!
