Let’s cram these three chase days into one SB entry, since they were rather short on excitement.
June 8/Start La Junta/lunch Copper Kitchen at La Junta/end Trinidad 130 miles
June 9/Start Trinidad/lunch Loves Subway at Eads/end Burlington 570 miles
June 10/Start Burlington/brunch Burlington VFW/end Belle Fourche 471 miles
On June 8 we cleaned the vans and our feet in La Junta following the mud-fest on the 7th. The marginal risk well down into south-central NM appeared to be too marginal and too low-end (due to insufficient shear for severe) to warrant the long drive from La Junta, especially since the chase on the 9th would be back up north around KS/NE/CO.
SPC Day One with verification for June 8
We had a relaxed day, stopping a few times along the road from Rocky Ford to Trinidad for photos. Weak storms tried to move off of the mountains west of Trinidad around sunset but struggled. Any lightning was very sporadic.
On June 9th, a large slight risk was drawn onto the Central Great Plains, with a smallish 5 percent tornado risk in NE/KS. I liked the area a little farther to the west, near Yuma, but that did not work out. The place to be was the Grant, Nebraska, area, where a decent severe storm developed. Fortunately, we salvaged the chase day with a pretty storm or two from Burlington to Sharon Springs. Hey, I got a couple of decent lightning photos! A couple of tornadoes in the 5% area were reportedly weak and brief.
June 10 was pretty much a total down day for all of the Great Plains. Our group had a brunch in Burlington and then made our way north to Belle Fourche. The next few days would feature supercells in and around Belle Fourche.
