SPC Day One/20Z

Another chase day in Texas for Tour 2, and we had decent prospects between I-20 and the Red River, around Throckmorton. Though instability was quite good, SPC noted that storm bases would be on the high side and wind shear was barely good enough for rotating updrafts. A token 2% was painted for tornadoes.

We first waited on a cell west of Throckmorton. It seemed to be in no hurry to get strong, but it was rotating. Another storm went up towards Seymour (see radar images below), and suddenly a whole bunch of storms were in progress and it was not particularly clear as to where we should be. After a false start or two north from Throckmorton, we went northeast towards Archer City. A rather potent storm looked awesome as we passed on its east side, NNE of Olney. I wanted to get to my east option at Archer City before the storm did. We went east, and the storm kind of went into lame mode, unfortunately. It was at its best when we were speeding by in front of it. The atmosphere just seemed to be out of sync today, and when stuff got messy, nothing was able to stay strong or discrete for very long.

The chase day and the tour came to a close at Wichita Falls, with a blood-red sky with double rainbow!
