This was the final chase day for Tour 8, and unfortunately we could not consider the better tornado risk up in central North Dakota due to the distance from Denver. Even more unfortunate was that we would be driving back to Denver on June 28th, the date of the excellent tornado event in eastern South Dakota near Gary. On the 27th, I targeted a weak boundary where big CAPE resided, generally north of Valentine. We were lured northward towards an impressive updraft near I-90 and Murdo. It was moving to the ESE, and the base was on the high side and the cell started spilling outflow at us, a little northeast of Ideal in Tripp County. It wasn’t quite what we were hoping for, but the storm structure was not bad at all. Wind was close to 60 mph or so.
