There was no thunderstorm activity to document during these four days, at least for myself. We had to get the Tour 1 guests back to OKC on May 3, and there wasn’t anything to chase on the 4th or 5th. Here are the mind-numbing details:
May 2, start Uvalde, TX; end Thackerville, OK; 528 miles; lunch at The Spread BBQ Pit in Brady, TX —- This was the last full chase day for Tour 1, and unfortunately, there was nothing to chase. We drove northward back towards Oklahoma against cool and moist north winds.
May 3, start Thackerville, OK; end OKC, about 120 miles —- Tour 1 back to the base city, prepare vehicles for Tour 2
May 4, start OKC; end Hoisington, KS; 283 miles; lunch at Phil’s BBQ in Enid, OK — position day for the new Tour 2 group. A cold front had swept all of he good moisture from the Plains on May 1, and we had to wait another day or two for decent return flow from the Gulf.
May 5, start Hoisington, KS; end Holyoke, CO; 355 miles; lunch at Natoma One-Way Cafe — no chance of thunderstorms again on the Plains, but good moisture would start to return the following day. Our group did a little exploring in the hills of Osborne County, Kansas, and we spent some time at Covert, a ghost town. We drove all of the way west to Holyoke, as some thunderstorms looked possible with upslope flow on the 6th. Along the way, we stopped in Natoma for lunch, in Damar to check out the big church, and at Beecher Island because it is there.
