I elected to target the western Oklahoma Panhandle and vicinity this day, as some development appeared likely towards the eastern edge of the Raton Mesa. SPC showed a marginal risk only, as both instability and shear were mediocre. SPC upgraded areas of the southern TX Panhandle to “slight risk” at 20Z.
We stopped at Wheeless (just east of the OK/NM line) and visited the abandoned structures. A high-based storm to our northwest strengthened some and moved over Wheeless. One-inch hail was observed and reported to the NWS. As the storm drifted towards Felt, it started to sputter. One last hail dump occurred just northeast of Felt, and soon it was Orphan Anvil City. We made our way up to Lamar for the night.
