This chase day was dominated by a significant squall line which surged out of Utah and Colorado early in the day. We watched it approach and pass through around sunset from the north edge of the Badlands, just south of Wall. We were hoping for something strong and isolated during the afternoon prior to the squall, in the vicinity of Howes and Faith, but hopes were dashed, faith was lost, and how’s that for creative writing?
The Tour 5 group photos below were taken on the day prior, at Scenic, SD. The old church/school building was in Cottonwood, SD. And, the leading edge of the squall at the Badlands was heralded by the laminar-looking linear shelfy thingie. As it neared, a couple of more-discrete “notches” developed along the squall, and a weak tornado was observed near Interior, not too far away to our east.
We were blasted by southwest winds of about 45-65 mph for maybe 10-20 minutes as the system passed. Big rigs on I-90 were blown over.
