Start: Denver
Lunch: Mi Ranchito/Sterling, CO
End: McCook, NE/354 miles
Today was the first chase day for Tour 5, out of Denver. We were in great shape to chase the slight risk area just across the border to the east, around Chase County, Nebraska. We got in front of a nice, isolated rotating updraft base about ten miles south of Enders. The base was a bit on the high side, as dew points were around the high 50s. I was worried that the storm might drag us east or southeast of highway 61 because 61 was impassable just a few miles south of our viewing location! We couldn’t get to an east option at Benkelman due to a washout. It would take forever to reposition by going back north to Highway 6!
It turned out that my concerns would not matter. The storm weakened slowly as it approached 61, and there would be no revival. We tried to salvage something else up towards Imperial, but these were linear, outflowing, and junky. I don’t even want to share the pictures of that. Why torture myself? When good storms are struggling at 6 p.m., chasers are sad.
