June 13, 2008 SW OK Storms

June 13th, 2008 by Bill

A boundary ran roughly SW-NE through southwest Oklahoma, and we watched towers struggle against the strong cap for much of the afternoon near Chickasha. A strong updraft looked good for a few minutes west of Lawton, and croaked. With an hour or so of daylight remaining, we tried to salvage something by racing west and south towards strong (but high-based) cells in the Vernon, TX, area, where temperatures were near 100F. I elected to stop well northeast of the cells, near Tipton, OK, just prior to sunset in order to photograph them in the nice light and colors. The cells in northwest Texas strengthened at dusk and had us shooting distant lightning well into the evening.
