July 1, 2011 Noctilucent clouds

July 1st, 2011 by William Reid

After our chase into southwestern MN today, we headed back west on I-90 to our motel in Plankinton, SD.  Near Mitchell, SD, Marcia pointed out a noctilucent cloud above the horizon to our northwest.  We exited west of Mitchell and set up the tripods and cameras for about 20 minutes.  The noctilucent cloud looked best about the time we stopped, and then gradually became fainter.  Most of my exposures were 5-10 seconds in duration at f2.8 to f3.2, ISO setting 200 to 800.
