Our chase tour group had enough time midday, north of Dalhart, to peruse the local wildlife and grasslands. On a stop near an ancient abandoned car, we viewed a hawk in a nearby dead tree. The hawk flew clumsily into the weeds adjacent to the road about 100 yards away. We walked over to it, and it just sat there and looked at us…and posed for pictures. We got to within about 8 feet with our long lenses pointed at it. The bird didn’t know what was going on. Our guide, Bob Smith, said it was likely a very young Swainson’s hawk. Later, I spotted a turtle crossing the road. Bob picked it up and I got in close with my wide-angle lens as it tried to scratch Bob to DEATH. Later in the day, Bob ran over the head of a turtle that was crossing the road.
