May 27-29, 2026 Rather lame pattern

We had some pretty scenery and some low-end storms to chase for these three days. Let’s lump it all together here.

May 27 Start: Ozona, TX/lunch: Tarzan and Jane convenience store in Stanton/end: Amarillo/455 miles

May 28/Start: Amarillo/lunch: Hodies BBQ in Dalhart/end: Clayton, NM/300 miles

May 29/Start: Clayton, NM/brunch: Front Porch in Texline, TX/lunch at Arbys in Lamar/end: Oberlin, KS/401 miles

On the 27th we made our way back northward from Ozona. Some weak and junky cells provided something to look at near Palo Duro Canyon.

On the 28th we enjoyed a relatively short jaunt to the Raton Mesa. Some healthy updrafts dropped some hail up to an inch in diameter. We made an attempt to head east on the unpaved portion of 456 between Folsom and Kenton, but then a storm cell went up right on top of our road, just to our east. We turned back to Folsom and south to Des Moines and had pretty scenery and storms to photograph, including lightning near dusk! Behold the Canon images:

The conditions for strong storms, maybe some supercells, ramped up quite a bit on the 29th. We drifted to the north and observed brief supercells near Cheyenne Wells and east of Colby. A handful of storm bases exhibited rotation, but these were rather ephemeral.
