Our Tempest chase group had quite a variety of storms to sample on Thursday, from Boise City to Logan, NM; and from San Jon, NM to Vega, TX. Even though this was a “monsoon tour” out of Phoenix, the monsoon had dried up in AZ, and there was enough instability and shear on the High Plains near the TX/OK Panhandles for severe weather. We began this day in Dalhart, and again targeted the Boise City area. (We had a bird stop just after brunch — see this post on SB.) A rather discrete cell came together just west of town, similar to the day prior, and showed some evidence of organization. However, other cells soon popped up and we had a bit of a wet mess by mid-afternoon.
On our way southwest near Logan, NM, we were treated to a linear/outflowing/whalesmouth-type event.
A lone supercell drew us south from Logan to San Jon and Endee, along I-40 in NM. It was moving a little south of due east at a moderate pace. We tried to drop in front of it on an occasionally paved “state highway” south from Endee, but gave up halfway there as the cell beat us to the road.
Back on the interstate, we went into “pretty sunset/storm photography” mode, and were treated to some excellent scenes from Adrian to Vega, TX.
